How to Become a Low-Key Subject Matter Expert on Linkedin
I hate posting on social media.
Frickin’ despise it.
But over the years, social media has grown my business.
It’s landed me new clients.
It’s helped me find people new jobs.
In short, as much as I don’t want to work on social media, it’s become my number one tool in my recruitment business. The funniest thing about all this shit is how bad I truly am at it. Yet somehow it works. I have found ways to grow my career and business by just being consistent on Linkedin and provide some mid-level value to my audience.
The number one piece of advice I give to LATAM job seekers?
Start leveraging Linkedin more.
I know… easier said than done, Tony.
You are working a full-time (sometimes two) jobs, conducting job searches, raising a family, and trying to build that side-hustle. Who has time to post on Linkedin?
Or even worse, the mere thought of posting on Linkedin creates so much anxiety our blood pressure can spike before we even had a chance to write something.
In other words, it’s just not worth posting.
But… what if it is?
The Honest Truth About Social Networking
These days its pretty obvious to see many social media influencers all over platforms selling classes or posting random things just for the clicks and engagements.
The reality?
It’s a necessary evil to a degree. The battle to find a new job has become so increasingly competitive in this job climate, it becomes more luck and speed than overall qualifications to land a job. Waiting to apply for an open job is just simply not enough. It becomes luck of the draw, and you just have to hope your application landed on the top of the hiring pile.
So what the hell do we do? Many people hate social media and prefer to keep to themselves (I am a classic introvert myself).
Utilize the network part of social media networks.
Don’t think of platforms like Linkedin and X as vehicles to create content for the sake of nothing. Instead, use it as a tactical weapon that allows you to create credibility among your network.
Posting strategically can help drive your expertise to the front of people’s pages, showing a different side than just reposting someone else’s content or telling an old co-worker “congratulations”.
So how do I get started?
Don’t Know What to Post About? Just Start Small.
Starting out with posting Linkedin content is really damn hard. For many people, they become overwhelmed with questions running around in their head.
What do I talk about?
Who should I be talking to?
You already want to jump out a window and you haven’t even posted a fucking thing!

Thinking about what my Tuesday post will look like
The trick?
Keep it super simple.
Ask yourself - “if I was asked to talk about one professional subject and only one subject only for an hour, non-stop, what would that subject be?”
When you stop and actually think, it makes perfect sense.
This is probably a topic you are passionate about, have tons of expertise in, and are able to have decidedly strong opinions on. The important thing to remember is provide content that will educate and provide your unique point of view.
Don’t just present information. Offer up commentary and perspective on a subject you love to teach people.
For example:
You are a Senior QA Engineer in Brazil, and you love to talk about automated testing. Open up a Google Doc and start listing off every topic around automated testing you could ever talk about.
💡What is automated testing?
💡How to get started in automated testing
💡Top 5 mistakes people make when starting out with automated testing
💡How automated testing can save you 20 hours a month
💡Top 3 automated testing frameworks 💡How to hire automated test engineers
💡Top 10 automated testing hacks
💡Best new AI tools to support automated testing
💡And so much more…
Once you have your topics written down, you can create:
✅ Text posts
✅ Videos
✅ Articles
✅ White paper and infographics
That’s 9 topics x 4 different mediums, giving you 36 pieces of original content you can use to post and help create your own personal brand.
Best part? You can massage the content again for a new angle and reuse for additional content later!
if I was asked to talk about one professional subject and only one subject only for an hour, non-stop, what would that subject be?
